Duration of Kshar Sutra Therapy for Fistula- in-ano depends on the length, type and location of the Fistula. It requires weekly seatings to change the Kshar Sutra. Most patients can be discharged the same day after the Kshar Sutra Therapy. Discomfort after surgery can be mild to moderate for the first week and can be controlled with pain pills. You can resume your daily work within 3-4 days. After every 1 week, old Kshar Sutra will be replaced with a new Kshar Sutra. Some pain and burning sensation is expected for first 24 hrs after changing the Kshar sutra as the medicine on the new Kshar Sutra is fresh. The amount of time lost from work or school is usually minimal. Treatment of an abscess is followed by a period of time at home, though the patient may need to see a family clinic daily for dressing of the wound. It may be necessary to wear a gauze pad or mini-pad to prevent the drainage from soiling clothes. Bowel movements will not affect healing.
Recurrence rate after Kshar Sutra Therapy is negligible. However, it is important to follow the directions of your doctor to prevent recurrence or development of a new fistula at a different site.
