    • Pain in abdomen
    • Abdominal cramps
    • Frequent episodes of diarrhoea, often with blood and pus
    • Pain at anus
    • Rectal bleeding (blood in stools)
    • Weight loss
    • Urgency to defecate
    • Loss of appetite
    • Difficulty in defecation despite urgency
    • Regular fever
    • Growth retardation in children
    • If the immune system is severely disturbed it may cause a few other problems also like eye problems, joint pain and liver disorders.

Types of Ulcerative Colitis

  • Type 1

    Ulcerative proctitis

    • Mildest form of ulcerative colitis.
    • Inflammation is confined to anus and rectum only (last part of large intestines).
    • Rectal bleeding may be the only symptom.

  • Type 2

    Proctosigmoiditis

    • Inflammation is present in rectum and sigmoid colon.
    • Bloody diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and inability to defecate despite of strong urge to defecate are common symptoms.

  • Type 3

    Left-sided colitis

    • Inflammation is extended in descending colon also (left side of large intestines).
    • Symptoms are usually worse.

  • Type 4

    Pancolitis

    • Affects entire large intestine.
    • Severe symptoms are there

  • Type 5

    Acute severe ulcerative colitis

    • Rare form
    • Symptoms are usually extreme.
