Rectal Polyp

What is Rectal Polyp

Rectal polyps are growths that develop in the rectum. It can also develop in large intestines (colon). Colorectal polyps are common and may be found in approximately 8-10 of every 10,000 persons.

Types of Rectal Polyp

Polyps are usually classified into two types: adenomatous polyps (adenomas) and hyperplastic polyps. The more common hyperplastic polyps are benign and, in most circumstances, are not considered to be premalignant. A definitive distinction between the two types requires polyp removal and microscopic examination by a pathologist.

Malignant polyps : Polyps that contain cancerous cells are known as malignant polyps. The optimal treatment for malignant polyps depends upon the extent of the cancer (when examined with a microscope) and other individual factors.

Symptoms of Rectal Polyp

  • Lump coming out of anus while passing stools. The lump can be pushed back inside the anus using fingers.
  • Bleeding
  • Mild Pain
  • Many times rectal polyps do not show any symptom.

Causes of Rectal Polyp

Although the exact causes are not completely understood, lifestyle risk factors include the following:

  • High-fat and low-fiber diet
  • Diet high in red meat
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Overweight
  • Age factor - chances are more as the age advances.
  • Family history and genetics - Polyps and colon cancer tend to run in families.

Rectal Polyp Diagnosis

Colonoscopy is the best way to evaluate the colon for polyps because it allows the clinician to see the entire lining of the colon.

Rectal polyps should be removed by Kshar Sutra Therapy or major surgery before they become malignant (cancerous).

Rectal Polyp Treatment Procedure:

Kshar Sutra Therapy can be done as an office procedure. Means no admission is required and treatment is given at OPD level. Polyps are ususally removed at the same time and root is tied up with a medicated thread so that the possibility of recurrence is further reduced.

Dietary guidelines for patients with rectal polyp

- Eat a diet that is low in fat and high in fruits, vegetables, and fiber

- Maintain a normal body weight

- Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol use
